Workshops & Abstracts for VAPRA Website

Bouncing Back to Recovery:   This workshop is geared toward learning about recreational activities that build confidence and aid in the process of recovery.  You will hear testimonials from consumers of Friendship Clubhouse.  This workshop provides a demonstration of juggling by one of the clubhouse consumers addressing how to use everyday activities for recovery.  Target Audience:   All audience.

Don’t Back Down – the Seven Principles of Effective Self-Advocacy:  The facilitator will interact with the audience in a discussion of seven basic ideas which will lead participants to understand how they can increase their effectiveness in advocating for themselves in the mental health deliver system and in life.  Target Audience:   People in recovery, mental health professionals, administrators, family members and others who are interested in learning how to more effectively advocate for themselves.

Recovery through Music:  Presented by the Taco Choir with consist of members from the four recovery centers:  Tazewell House, Ark House, Clinch Mountain House and OUR House which are supported by Cumberland Mountain Community Services Board.  The Choir will perform several songs choices with members taking time in between some of the songs to reflect/explain how the choir has helped with their individual recovery process.  Target Audience:  People in recovery, Service Providers, Program Managers, Administrators and other individuals who might want to start a similar program in their area.

Sailing Along:  This workshop will showcase a video of personal interviews to discuss various individuals won journey to recovery.  It will explore different ideas of recovery. Target Audience:   People in recovery, Professionals and other service providers.

Fun Can Be Therapeutic:  Come prepared to laugh and have good time with “Morning Glory” the clown.  This is a “hands on” workshop.  Individuals will learn the benefits of humor and laughter through therapeutic clowning.  Target Audience:  All audience.

The Case Manager – Peer Provider Team:  The overall goal of this workshop is to show how peer providers and CSB staff can work harmoniously together, how peer providers relate to peers in a very different way than case managers, will strive to explain the training and philosophical approach of peer providers, will look at barriers to teamwork, will address what type of relationship peers would like to see between the two mental health colleagues.  Target Audience:  Case Managers, Peers, Peer Providers & Administrators.

Coping with Adult ADHD:   The goal of this workshop is to educate others about adult ADHD, and how adult ADHD can affect adults with this disorder.  It will educate others on how ADHD is not just a childhood or adolescent disorder, but one that continues in to adulthood.  It will cover what ADHD is, its symptoms, its effects, coping skills, and how to live with ADHD on a daily basis.  Target Audience:  People in recovery, Professionals and other Service Providers.

Intro to WRAP as an Advanced Directive:  WRAP helps those who struggle with mental illness by coordinating different aspects of a healthy approach to recovery.  As an advanced-directive, it puts one in a place of control and informs your supporters on how to better address your expressed needs when you are in crisis. Target Audience:  Consumers and Providers alike.

How Physical Health Affects Mental Health:  This workshop addresses how your physical health plays a part in the recovery of your mental health.  It will address how you feel mentally when your physical health in is crisis.  Target Audience:  All Audience.

My Life, My Choices:  Advance Directives as Recovery Tools:  With recent changes in Virginia law, advance directives can be a powerful toll for recovery.  We will cover the basics and discuss how they can be used most effectively. This is a universal issue that we all face, regardless of age, diagnosis, title or status in life.   Target Audience:  People in recovery, Professionals, other service providers, Administrators. 

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Wellness:  The Wizard of Oz is a classic tale of traveling through life and facing frightening and intimidating challenges.  Dorothy was able to follow the yellow brick road to Oz because she and companionship.  Individuals in recovery, professionals and family members can make the journey more victorious by traveling together.  Target Audience.  People in recovery, Professionals, Family members.  All are welcome.

Key Components of Maintaining a Recovery Lifestyle:  In this workshop presenters will share their thoughts and personal experiences related to what they feel are the key components to maintaining a recovery lifestyle.  This will be an interactive forum for discussion.  Target Audience:  Individuals in recovery.

Reaching Out for Wellness:   This workshop will assist participants to explore themselves through their five senses and demonstrate how our Clubhouse members connect with themselves, their peers, the community and the World through the arts and perception.  Target Audience:  People in recovery, Professionals, other Service Providers.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan Introduction:  This workshop will introduce the Wellness Recovery Action Plan.  Presenters will share their Recovery Stories and Recovery ideas with participants.  This will be an educational workshop provided by peers and those attending will be urged to share their thoughts and ideas about wellness and recovery and encouraged to develop a WRAP Plan.  Targeted Audience: All audience.

Firewalkers:  Sharing your story of transformation:  We would like to present a story sharing workshop that asks questions such as “Has your diagnosis brought anything good into your life or made you a better person in any way?”  Target Audience:   People in recovery, Individuals who are newly diagnosed, Providers & Administrators.

Recovery at the VA – Bringing the New Freedom to Life for Veterans:  This workshop will outline the development of recovery in the VA, which is the largest healthcare provider in the country (156 hospitals and numerous Community Based Outpatient Clinics).  The inclusion of Recovery Oriented Treatment, peer facilitators, Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Centers, developing Family to Family with NAMI, Peer to Peer, WRAP, and Veterans Advisory Councils will be highlighted.  Target Audience:  All audience.

Janssen – Choices in Recovery – Achieving Wellness and Recovery:  This workshop is designed to help people living with schizophrenia begin to work toward achieving wellness and recovery.  It will address symptom management, working with your treatment team to develop a plan, setting realistic treatment goals and communicating with your treatment team and loved ones.  Target Audience:  All audience.

Janssen – Choices in Recovery – Relapse Awareness and Prevention Strategies:  This workshop is designed to help people living with schizophrenia, their family members and caregivers to understand and reduce your chances of relapse.  Target Audience:  All audience.

Kepro & Pre-Authorizations – Round table Discussion:  Discussions related to the new pre-authorization process and an opportunity for program to share their experience with this process.  Target Audience:  All Mental Health Professionals.
