The 2008 Virginia Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association ( VAPRA ) conference will be held at the Sheraton Richmond West Hotel, Richmond, Virginia on November 19-21. Our theme, I Am the Face of Change, reflects the ongoing changes required in the individual process of recovery and in the service delivery system. Wednesday at 1:30 in our Opening Session we will hear from Jim Martinez, Director of the Office of Mental Health Services, DMHIDSAS. Dr. James Reinhard, our Commissioner, will follow him. Both will speak to changes, challenges, and future hopes for the mental health system. We have scheduled time for attendees to address their questions to both speakers. On Thursday morning at 9:00, our Keynote Speaker, Joseph Hand, will offer a morning of inspiration and laughter as he shares his life story of overcoming obstacles through stories and song. Joseph has 12 years of experience in psychosocial programs with Mountain Roger CSB. He served as a board member of IAPSRS. His experience includes clubhouse counselor, residential technician, and children’s summer programs. Joseph is now the Owner/Broker of RE/MAX Landmark Real Estate in Wytheville and has become one of the top sales people in Southwest Virginia. With over $80 million in sales, Joseph ranks in the top 5% of Realtors in the country. This did not happen overnight or easily as Joseph had a significant disability to overcome. His story is proof that anything is possible if you believe in yourself. We will also offer a diverse selection of workshops, starting Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday. We will hold our annual Business Meeting on Friday morning. Don’t miss this exciting and informative conference. We hope to see you in Richmond!
